New Energy in SNG Neighborhood Groups

Seattle Neighborhood Greenways is a coalition of neighborhood groups, all led and run by volunteers like you and supported by our staff. One of the most inspiring stories of this year has been the surge of new volunteer leadership across our neighborhood groups. In every corner of the city, people are stepping up to organize their neighbors, lead campaigns, and imagine safer, more welcoming streets.
This year, we saw renewed momentum and organizing in Lake City Greenways, Northeast Seattle Greenways, and Duwamish Valley Safe Streets. In Northwest and Central Seattle, people stepped up into new leadership roles, building out stronger, more sustainable teams. Across our coalition, people are taking on organizing community walks and rides, meeting with city staff, pushing long‑delayed safety projects forward, and making their neighborhoods safer, more convenient, and more joyful places to walk, bike, and live.

Our community is what makes us powerful. When we all lean in and share the work of outreach, event planning, and advocacy, our coalition is healthier, stronger, and more potent in our advocacy. We are a people-powered movement where neighbors have real influence to make change on our streets. Together as SNG, we mobilize and organize people to transform the city into a better place to walk, bike, and roll.
As we look back on the year, we’re deeply grateful to everyone who stepped into new roles—whether you’re leading a neighborhood group, hosting your first event, quietly keeping a project on track behind the scenes, or just talking to your neighbors about the problems you see and how to work together to address them. Your time and energy are the reason crosswalks are safer, bike routes are getting built, kids can get to school safely, and we can all get where we need to go.
Here are a few words from some of our leaders from across the city this year who have stepped up to lead impactful organizing efforts:
"I couldn't be more proud to take on this role. In just the last two years, CSG members have fought successfully to restore a car-free connection as part of the Roanoke Lid project, got 12th Ave protected bike lanes included in the Seattle transportation levy, brought tremendous attention to the chronically late 8 bus in joyous and creative ways, and helped improve pedestrian and cyclist safety on Pike and Pine. We're a force for positive change, and I'm so honored to have the trust of my inspiring fellow members."

"I'm so excited to help lead CSG to provide a platform to start moving the needle on safety, climate change, and livability. The outpouring of support following our Race The L8 event has been so humbling and has shown that Seattle is ready to show up to fight for more and better transit, walking, and biking. I can't wait to see CSG continue this fight and make Seattle a safe, sustainable, wonderful place to live for everyone."

"NW Greenways sits at the perfect intersection of building community through relationships and prioritizing well-being, which are two of my core values. One of my favorite projects this past year was the NE Greenwood street murals. It was incredibly meaningful to see neighbors come together to create functional art that supports safe routes, encourages slower traffic, and makes our streets more welcoming. These murals have become bright spots in my daily commute, and I’m excited to continue contributing to projects that build a more people-centered neighborhood where everyone can thrive."

“I've been delighted to join SNG this year and work with Jack, Nat, and all our neighbors to make the streets safer for active transportation. As world news overwhelms or depresses, it's been reinvigorating to focus locally on a topic that has positive impacts on the climate, public safety, community building, and health. SNG has a tremendous track record, but the grassroots approach has given us a lot of agency to shape the priorities and activities of our local neighborhood group. Really excited to see everything we accomplish in 2026!”

“I kept wishing there was an active group in Lake City. Eventually, I accepted that, as the quote goes, ‘it takes just as much energy to wish as it does to plan. I'm really enjoying working with my co-organizers, Muriel, Machiko, and Dai, and all our LCG members, to work towards a safer, more joyful neighborhood.”
El Lee, Lake City Greenways

"My favorite quote that has been working for me is 'it takes a village to raise a child.' My son was raised by a community of cyclists (Cascade Bicycle Club Ride Leaders) and is now an accomplished cyclist and bike mechanic. Now I see a similar thing working for our neighborhood. A village of so many amazing and active volunteers working (or 'raising') Lake City to be an amazing place to be!
P.S. Another favorite quote is "if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."
